Welcome !

Welcome to our website! Troop 521 meets every Tuesday from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm at Cool Spring Baptist Church in Mechanicsville, Virginia.

We are a large and very active troop with a variety of activities and scheduled monthly outings.  We attribute our success to our active adult leadership, "boy-run troop" philosophy with focus on advancement, merit badges and high adventure activities which keeps our scouts very interested and involved.

Please contact our Scoutmaster if you would like to join or find out more about us

Medical Forms for all scouts

Posted on May 26 2025 - 1:21am

A reminder .... We have to have an updated (once per year) medical form on file with the Troop whenever we go on a camping trip, even if a parent is also on the trip. These medical forms travel with us in case we need some information or we need to get a scout to a doctor. Everyone needs to fill out the primary health and medical form, the A and B form, available here .. https://www.scouting.org/health-and-safety/ahmr/ . Those scouts going to summer camp also need a form C also available at the same link. The difference is A and B is a health history, insurance info and permissions. The part C is to be filled out by a doctor. If you turned in a form after January 1, we should have that on file.

Please check with Mr Rapp to be sure you have an up to date medical form on file with the Troop.

Patrol organization and youth leadership

Posted on May 19 2025 - 1:31am

With a successful Senior Patrol Leader Election last week, we will now turn our attention to reorganizing the patrols and setting other youth leadership positions. If you need a leadership position to continue to advance (above 1st class ranks), please let the SPL know. We will try to find a position for all that need one.

SUMMER CAMP ~ 2025 ~ Final Payment and Information Due!

Posted on May 19 2025 - 1:20am

Every person going to Summer Camp will receive a new 2025 Troop t-shirt! Please provide your t-shirt size to Mr. Rost as soon as possible! We only order in Adult sizes so please keep that in mind. When we get a price on the shirts, we will take orders for additional shirts for anyone who wants them.

Please remember that the balance for Summer Camp, $235 in most cases, is due by May 20th!

Remember that we need to have a complete Physical, including Part C filled out by a physician, dated after July 12, 2024, for each person attending Summer Camp. You can download the medical form at https://www.scouting.org/health-and-safety/ahmr/

Check your Merit Badge requirements to see if there are any prerequisites that should be completed before going to camp. Completing them prior to camp will help to prevent getting a partial completion for your Merit Badge. This is important if your Merit Badge has a requirement that you perform a particular activity for a period of time, in many cases it can be done before camp.

We currently have 26 Scouts and 7 adults going to Summer Camp!

Senior Patrol Leader Election rescheduled to Tuesday, May 13th!

Posted on May 12 2025 - 1:47am

Needing your input, the Senior Patrol Leader Election was rescheduled to Tuesday, May 13th!!

This Tuesday  May 13th, we will be holding our semi-annual election for Senior Patrol Leader. This is the highest youth office in the Troop. The Senior Patrol leader is the scout that runs the Troop (not the adults who advise only). Please make every effort to attend this meeting. You will be choosing your leader for the next six months. Next week (May 20) we will be choosing patrols and electing Patrol Leaders.

This is your opportunity to choose who will be your leader!

The Senior Patrol Leader elections will be in a format similar to what we have done in the past. This includes a presentation (speech) by the the candidates, then a follow up question and answer session in a round table format.

Backpacking trip to Hog Gap Camp

Posted on Apr 28 2025 - 1:02am

At this Tuesday's meeting, we will continue our plans and menus for the mountain trip on May 3 and 4. Remember, if you don't want to backpack or if you just are not sure if you are up to the full 8.8 miles (with a full backpack), we are offering a 4 to 5 mile day hike with as much or as little gear as you wish to carry. Even if you start on the backpacking portion of the trip, there will be a way you can stop and join the base campers after approximately 4 miles.

More details will be out at the meeting this Tuesday including gathering and return times. (Note: this is a one night trip. We are leaving early Saturday and returning on Sunday)
