Welcome !

Welcome to our website! Troop 521 meets every Tuesday from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm at Cool Spring Baptist Church in Mechanicsville, Virginia.

We are a large and very active troop with a variety of activities and scheduled monthly outings.  We attribute our success to our active adult leadership, "boy-run troop" philosophy with focus on advancement, merit badges and high adventure activities which keeps our scouts very interested and involved.

Please contact our Scoutmaster if you would like to join or find out more about us

Grand Caverns - April 24-26, 2026

Posted on Apr 20 2026 - 2:50am
After the meeting on Tuesday night, we put together all of the information regarding sign-ups for our upcoming trip to the Grand Caverns, April 25-27, 2026. We still have 5 available slots for the Rock Bottom Adventure tours that we booked. We expected better participation than we are seeing! This is an exciting program being led by well-trained GC personnel into a well documented cave.

Grand Caverns, formerly known as Weyer's Cave, is located in the central Shenandoah Valley in the town of Grottoes, Virginia, United States. A limestone cavern, it claims the distinction of being America's oldest show cave, in operation since 1806.

Aside from the caverns, there are several hiking trails and fishing in the South Fork of the Shenandoah River, stocked with trout by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources. We have a large shelter rented for the weekend so we don't need to worry about weather!

We would really like to fill those other 5 spots that we have for the cave tour! We probably need additional adult participation for transportation, even if you don't want to go into the cave!

2026 T-Shirt Design

Posted on Apr 13 2026 - 6:13am

We would like to have one of our Scouts design this year's T-Shirt that we normally debut  for summer camp. The only design criteria that we have is that it must be centered around America's 250th Anniversary theme.  Deisigns do not have to be camera ready - we can do the final artwork. Mr. Rost would be glad to help any Scout develop their idea into a final design. Designs need to be turned into Mr. Rost by May 5th.

Fundraiser: Spirit Night at Marty's Grill - April 27, 2026

Posted on Apr 12 2026 - 7:13pm

Marty’s Grill, in Rutland Commons Shopping Center, hosts Spirit Nights to support local non-profit groups as their way of giving back to the community!

On Monday, April 27, 2026, Marty’s Grill in Rutland Commons Shopping Center, will donate a portion of the day’s food sales to Troop 521. This covers Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner, Dine-In or Carry-Out, from 7 AM to 10 PM.

It would be great if we could fill Marty’s with Scout families to increase their sales that day! It wouldn’t hurt to wear a Scout t-shirt or mention Scouts to let them know that we appreciate their support. Invite all your friends and neighbors, as well!

4/24 - 4/26 Caving at Grand Caverns, Grottoes, Viginia - Waiver

Posted on Apr 8 2026 - 11:50pm
To all who are going to go on the April 24th-26th, 2026 Caving Trip -

Please print out both pages of the attached Waiver form and return the completed form to Joe Curran at the next Troop meeting on April 14th.

Place the name of the Scout or Adult on the top of the first page and fill in all of the information at the bottom of the second page. No one will be allowed to enter the cave without having completed this form.

We have booked two 15 person Rock Bottom Adventure Tours so we will only have 30 people going into the caverns. The cost for those 30 people will be $29 each payable to the Troop (the actual cost is $49 but the Troop is picking up $20 of that cost).  Venmo preferred - @Troop-Fivetwoone.

As usual, there will be an additional food charge which will be paid in cash to the Troop/Patrol Grubmasters - that amount will be announced at the Troop meeting prior to the trip.

Additional Scouts and Adults can go along just for the camping experience (and to keep the Scoutmaster company) by just paying the food costs.

Those going into the caverns will get muddy! Bring old clothes, preferably coveralls, closed toe and heel shoes or hiking boots and a plastic bag to bring your muddy clothes home. Helmets, lamps, knee pads, and gloves will be provided!

Order of the Arrow Conclave at Brady Saunders - April 24/26

Posted on Apr 6 2026 - 1:31am

Yearly the OA Lodges around the State of Virginia hold a Conclave (gathering) bringing approximately a thousand arrow-men together for training, competitions, food and fun. This year the conclave will be at Camp T. Brady Saunders. This event is open to all OA members in the Nawakwa Lodge.   Registration is open at www.OAe9.org (Click on Nawakwa Lodge).

The Lodge needs staff and delegates as we are the host Lodge. There is lots for us to do!

We are holding work days (needing many volunteers) on April 11 and April 18. All are invited to come out and volunteer. Those helping will earn a special pocket flap representing our Conclave theme "Down on the Farm".

If you have questions, please talk to Jack C or most any adult leader. You can find a lot of info at the web site above.
