Welcome !

Welcome to our website! Troop 521 meets every Tuesday from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm at Cool Spring Baptist Church in Mechanicsville, Virginia.

We are a large and very active troop with a variety of activities and scheduled monthly outings.  We attribute our success to our active adult leadership, "boy-run troop" philosophy with focus on advancement, merit badges and high adventure activities which keeps our scouts very interested and involved.

Please contact our Scoutmaster if you would like to join or find out more about us

Posted on Sep 2 2024 - 12:53am

This Tuesday, September 3, in place of our regular Troop meeting, we will be holding our Fall  Court of Honor. We will be meeting in the sanctuary of Cool Spring Baptist instead of our normal rooms in the basement. Enter through the parlor or the welcome center. Our scouts will be recognized for all of their advancement and achievement since our June Court of Honor. (summer camp)

The whole family is invited to take part in this Court. All scouts who are advancing a rank will receive a parents pin for their parent (usually Mom)

Scouts should arrive around 6:45pm. All scouts should be in Class A, Full dress uniform with their merit badge sash (if they have one).

We will be discussing the upcoming fund raiser, grass seed and fertilizer sale.

We will be taking sign ups for the air show and rail camp.

Week of August 26

Posted on Aug 26 2024 - 1:45am

We had a great trip to Westmoreland State Park. 17 Scouts and 7 Adults visited George Washington's birthplace and family farm. Watched a short movie on the Washingtons, then visited the family burying ground. Most wanted to know why George wasn't there with his close relatives. After lunch, we went to fossil beach. Most Scouts (but not all) found at least one fossil or sharks tooth. While there we discussed the sedimentary layers on the cliffs as part of the Nature Merit Badge. After dinner everyone enjoyed the great weather sitting around the campfire.

If you found any fossils or sharks teeth, please sent me a photo of them, or bring them to scouts Tuesday and I'll photograph them to put on our facebook page. ( tim.swingle@verizon.net )

Don't forget, next Tuesday, September 3, is our Fall Court of Honor. More details will come out later.

On September 14th we will hold our largest fundraiser, our grass seed and fertilizer sale. This is a "all hands on deck" event.

September 20 through 22 is our trip to First Landing State Park to see the Oceania Air Show. Sign ups are ongoing.

October 18 through 20 is the rail camp trip to Spencer, NC. All scouts will be working on the railroading merit badge.

Lots of things in the works for a busy Fall.

This weeks meeting - Tuesday, August 20

At last, I have internet access again. Thank you Verizon.

This Friday (August 23 / 25) we will have our last adventure of the Summer. We plan to camp at Westmoreland State Park, on the Potomac River in Montross, Virginia. (145 Cliff Rd, Montross, VA 22520). We hope to work on the Citizenship merit badges, visit a historical site and dig for fossils on the cliffs. We plan to leave at 5:45 pm on Friday with a return at 12:30 pm on Sunday. Cost for the scouts is food money only ($15). Please bring $15 in cash to cover your food to Tuesday's meeting so your grubmaster will have the money to buy your food. If you do not, you will need to make special arrangements with your grubmaster. If you have not signed up to go on this trip, please let an adult leader or your patrol leader know before Wednesday.

We hope everyone is ready to get back to school. We know a lot of you return on Monday and the rest of you on Tuesday. Hope that your summer reading is complete! Good Luck!

Patrol Dutch Oven cook off

Posted on Jul 29 2024 - 1:17am

We had a small but enthusiastic group for the Dutch Oven Cook Off event. Hopefully everyone took something away from the event. Thanks go out to the adults that helped make it happen. The scouts also completed a small, but  needed, service project for the owners of the property.

Hopefully we can do something like this again in the future.

Not a lot to report on this week. A lot of our scout families are vacationing. Rest up!

Our next adventure will be a day adventure on July 27. We plan to have a cooking demonstration and competition. Working primarily with dutch ovens, we will try some different (but doable) recipes in an ongoing effort to elevate the cooking skills of the Troop. A primary location has been secured as well as a back-up location. More details will be out soon.

Summer Camp wrap up and more

Posted on Jul 8 2024 - 1:47am

Well, it's been a couple of weeks since we got back from summer camp. Hopefully everyone has recuperated from the weak.It was a hot one. Everyone did great. There were only a few bouts of homesickness (among the adults). All of the scouts did well.

We are currently putting all of the earned merit badges into the Scoutbook program. We are hoping we will have them for the scouts this Tuesday or next.

Please note the Patrol Leaders Council firmed up the Troop schedule for the rest of the year. Take a look at the updated calendar.
